Overview

User retentions and attractions needed for Baduk player

My Role

UX/UI Designer Lead

THE BACKGROUND

The Client:
OGS, Online-go.com

Online-Go.com, potentially rebranding as baduk.com is a free place to play the game of Baduk, also known as Go, Igo, Weiqi, and others.

Baduk has many millions of players in Korea, Japan, and China, and a few hundred thousand players scattered around the rest of the world. Product owners have done well capturing a large portion of “the rest of the world”, but the Online go team only has a few thousand players coming from Korea, Japan, and China, which we would like to change.

Online-Go.com, potentially rebranding as baduk.com is a free place to play the game of Baduk, also known as Go, Igo, Weiqi, and others. Baduk is a very old game dating back 2500 years and has been the subject of study for just as long. For many players, studying and observing is just as, if not more, important than playing the game. Baduk has many millions of players in Korea, Japan, and China, and a few hundred thousand players scattered around the rest of the world. We have done well capturing a large portion of the “the rest of the world”, but we only have a few thousand players coming from Korea, Japan, and China, which we would like to change.

USER TESTING

User testing

I conducted user testing with a designated coffee shop within set of times. I explained the demo version of the mobile clickable file to five different users between 30-60's and see how users react to the prototype. I found out lots of serious issues to navigate the app.

The Statement

" I love OGS and pretty easy to use but still some menu was clunky and clash. Also I wish I could use this game in iOS device"

(Sunwoo Lee, OGS user and Chef)

FINDING 1 INFORMATION ARCHTIECUTRE ISSUES

Information Architecture Issues

A strong information architecture will enable users to quickly and intuitively find familiarize themselves with the digital environment and to find what they are looking for and complete on boarding donation process. Optimizing a sitemap for a website or mobile app also helps visitors to find information quickly.

Results: Online-Go.com has basics however, beginner users can be confused by the overwhelming user interface at first. In order to reduce the friction to joining the game especially Western gamers, we need more explanations and community gathering inside online-go.com

The best way you can learn the game is to watch how others play go and learn more about their tactics. You can easily join any games on online-go.com without any questions to be signed in.

Interactions

Simply click to go to the next step and smart animations

Easy sign up

Online go has dark mode and day mode options and also, you don't have to download java or any other software to play the game. I remove the friction of on boarding process and navigation should be easy to join.

RESULT

Sign up and user engagement time Increase

Using Google Analytics and Semrush Marketing reports,

I found out the huge social impact on keywords variations compare to 6 months ago. I imagined increasing user completion of sign-up and decreasing user drop-off on the onboarding process.

I also expect to see increased retention rates and user engagement rates along with the updates. To conduct a detailed retention analysis, I started by monitoring in-app behavior, performed cohort analysis to find months when users churn, and looked at engagement scores over time to identify unique gamification trends.
